Dr. James Sanfilippo of Reconstructive Orthopedics was New Jersey’s top provider for spinal fusion procedures between January 2013 and December 2016. He had the highest number of cases successfully discharged for this procedure and the lowest percentage of patients requiring additional professional care (skilled nursing facility) during post-hospital recovery. Dr. Sanfilippo routinely consults patients in need of back, neck and spine care at Reconstructive Orthopedics in Bordentown, Moorestown and Vineland.
Dexur, a health analytics service, published their findings on March 9, 2018, on their website, dexur.com, in an article comparing New Jersey’s top physicians in their performance of spinal fusion procedures. According to the article detailing a nearly three-year analysis period, Dr. Sanfilippo had 135 total discharges for noncervical spinal fusions and the lowest skilled nursing facility discharge rates at only 12.1 percent, signifying both efficiency and efficacy of care. Of all his spinal fusion patients (the highest number in the state), the vast majority were able to leave the hospital to complete their recovery from home (at the highest rate in the state).
Dr. Sanfilippo treats most of his surgical spine cases at Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly, one of the "best overall hospitals" (with fewer than 350 beds) as designated by licensed New Jersey physicians via survey from Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. Dr. Sanfilippo also performs spinal procedures at Inspira Medical Center in Vineland, part of the Inspira Health Network that was named in Inside Jersey’s Top Hospitals 2018 listing.
“I am honored to be recognized for my proficiency in spinal fusion surgery,” says Dr. Sanfilippo, “My primary concern is the safety, comfort and quality of life of my patients, and it is a privilege to have the trust of so many patients when it comes to their spinal needs.”
As a board-certified orthopedic surgeon fellowship-trained in spine surgery, Dr. Sanfilippo has extensive training and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of back, neck and spine disorders. Additionally, South Jersey Magazine named Dr. Sanfilippo a “Best Doctor” in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. He is currently the chief of the spine section at Reconstructive Orthopedics, chair of the Virtua Brain and Spine Institute and the medical director of the musculoskeletal service line at Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly.
